Supports

What happens after diagnosis

If a diagnosis of dyslexia has been made your child may need extra tuition. The options available fall into two categories: school-based supports, and supports outside of school:

School-Based Supports:

  • Support from the class teacher
  • Withdrawal from class to attend a Learning Support teacher
  • Withdrawal from class to attend a Resource teacher
  • Enrolment in a special reading school or reading unit

Please click here for further information on the school based supports.

Supports Outside of School:

  • Support on a one-to-one basis from a DAI trained tutor
  • Enrolment in a DAI Workshop, Exam Class and/or Summer School

DAI Supports Outside of School

DAI supports are only available to members of the association. If you would like further information on what is available in your own area, please send us the annual membership fee (40 Euro), your name, address and telephone number, and your child's name and age. Please clearly state that you are requesting information on our tutorial system. When we have received this information, we will write back to you with all the relevant information including specific contacts for what is available in your own area in terms of teachers who offer one-to-one tuition, contacts for local workshops (group classes), etc. The teaching programme is determined by the teacher on the basis of the information contained in the psychological report.

INDIVIDUAL TUITION

The Association maintains a countrywide list of specialist teachers/tutors who are willing to give private one-to-one tuition. For further information, click here. DAI's tutor lists are only available to current members.

WORKSHOPS

The Dyslexia Association runs special out-of-school facilities, called Workshops, for students with Specific Learning Disability (Dyslexia) in 32 locations around the country. The number is growing all the time. Workshops provide appropriate specialist tuition in a small group setting. Each session lasts two hours. There are two terms in the year and the cost of tuition works out at approximately €350-400 per term. However, each workshop has its own requirements regarding payment of fees. Each student must have been assessed by a psychologist before enrolling (and diagnosed with dyslexia) and a copy of the assessment report must be made available to the Programme Co-ordinator at the time of application. Students attending must be members of the DAI and hold a current membership card.

For workshops outside of Dublin, you should contact the local group for enrolment details. A full list of contact people for all branches nationwide can be found in the branches section of this website.

A pre-enrolment form to apply for a place in any of the Dublin workshops can be downloaded. This form is in PDF format. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view PDF Files. If you do not have Acrobat Reader, click on the icon at the bottom of this webpage to download a free version from the Adobe site.

Workshops are a community activity. They depend on the efforts of a voluntary committee which organises and administers the local branch. Parents of children receiving tuition are expected to support their Workshop by becoming involved in the work of the local branch. Committee work, fund-raising, support to new parents, public awareness and lobbying for better services for children with dyslexia are some of the activities of branches.

There are usually long waiting lists for a place in a Workshop, so it is advisable to get names on the list early. Contact names for this purpose can be obtained from the national office. While awaiting a place in a Workshop, a child can receive private one-to-one individual tuition.

EXAM PREPARATION CLASSES

DAI also runs Exam Preparation classes to help students sitting State exams (Junior and Leaving Certificate). These classes are offered by some branches and also in the national office in Suffolk Street in Dublin. The course generally consists of weekly sessions of two hours duration. The course covers the English syllabus, as well as on-going development of efficient reading, revision, note-taking and writing skills. This course runs from September to April of the exam year.

Information and application forms for the Suffolk Street exam classes are available now for the classes which will start in September 2009.
