The SQ3RM Technique

Remembering What You Read

  1. Survey the chapter you are going to read. Read the summary and the section headings.

  2. When you know what the chapter is about, write a list of the main questions that you would want to be able to answer if you had read the chapter.

  3. Read the chapter with the questions in mind. Take brief notes that will allow you to formulate answers to these questions. It is often a good idea to read with a highlighter in hand so you can highlight key words and phrases.

  4. Recite the questions and your answers to them when you have finished reading the chapter.

  5. Review the chapter by skimming through it and checking that your answers to the questions were correct.

  6. Structure the questions and the answers to them into a map. Put your map on the wall for a week. Look at it. Read it aloud. Trace it with your finger.
