The SQ3RM Technique
Remembering What You Read
- Survey the chapter you are going to read. Read the summary and the section headings.
- When you know what the chapter is about, write a list of the main questions that you would want to be able to answer if you
had read the chapter.
- Read the chapter with the questions in mind. Take brief notes that will allow you to formulate answers to these questions.
It is often a good idea to read with a highlighter in hand so you can highlight key words and phrases.
- Recite the questions and your answers to them when you have finished reading the chapter.
- Review the chapter by skimming through it and checking that your answers to the questions were correct.
- Structure the questions and the answers to them into a map. Put your map on the wall for a week. Look at it.
Read it aloud. Trace it with your finger.
